To remain electronically in touch with ISAP and his members, you are offered the following two, non-mutually exclusive means:
Automatic E-mail Notice that ISAP WEB page(s) have been changed
This service is offered free of charge by NETMIND. Netmind's robot scans WEB pages registered with it on a daily basis. If a change is noticed and you are a subscriber for that page, a short E-mail is sent to you telling you that a change has occured (each message indicates the URL of the page you asked this service for; if you have a recent version of Eudora and Netscape, or a similar mail programme, you only need to click on this URL to load the page; each message also gives instructions as how to cancel this service if no longer desired).
To register with NETMIND for ISAP "What 's new" WEB page, just fill up the following form (this page will always contain a summary of the changes in all ISAP pages with appropriate links; to register other WEB pages, contact NETMIND directly).
!! This will connect you to the NETMIND Web site in the U.S. Depending of the time of the day, the connexion can be fairly slow if from ouside North America (especially between 2pm and 8pm GMT 0 time). You MUST wait for a COMPLETE load of each Web page sent by NEMIND before answering any question on that page (check that the Netscape or Internet Explorer "window" has come to immobility and/or that your status line says "Document done").
The steps NETMIND will make are as follows:
(2) sending of another NETMIND page with a preliminary confirmation of your registration.
You may quit at this stage; to come back to the present ISAP page and to previous ones, just click several times on the 'Back' button of your browser;
(3) after a few hours, sending of an E-mail message for definitive confirmation of your regisitration (during this period of time, NETMIND checks that our server is working properly; if our server does not answer at the time NETMIND checks it, you will be warned but you will need to redo the registration process from scratch).
Subscribing to ISAP diffusion list (<isap_list>)
ISAP diffusion list is a moderated list maintained on a university INTERNET server (<lewsun.md.ucl.ac.be>) on behalf of and as a courtesy to ISAP. If you know what that means, click here; if you don't, read up the following information.
In INTERNET present days two main types of lists exist (i) the non-moderated, and (ii) the moderated ones. The major difference is the way messages are handled. In non-moderated lists, everyone is able to send message(s) to the server which will then simply but blindly relay the un-edited message(s) to all subscribers. While this seems like a nice democratic forum, it often results in confusion, dissemination of unreliable news etc..., just to name a few of the less annoying problems. In moderated lists, a physical person acts as the recipient of all incoming messages. It is then up to him to decide which messages will be relayed, possibly after editing. He will also act as the middleman between the organizers of the list and the actual operators of the server to send out messages of general interest to the subscribers.
To be effective and useful, the list (i.e. the set of lectronic adresses and the software to run the system) must be maintained on an INTERNET server in a stable way (the address must not be changed too often to avoid inconvenience the subscribers). The server must be operating at all time and must preferably be on a main INTERNET highway or node so that all subscribers have a fast and reliable service. The server must also perate at no cost, since there is no simple way of setting up accounts and collecting fees from the subscribers to the list. For these reasons, most lists are "housed" in university servers (commercial servers may get closed for a number of reasons foreign to the purpose of the list and may also charge high fees for the maintenance of the lists and for access)
The ISAP diffusion list is physically located in Brussels, Belgium on the WEB server of the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Louvain (name of the server: <lewsun.md.ucl.ac.be> or <130.104.5.1>), as a courtesy to ISAP. All techicalities are therefore taken care of at this site, but this is totally transparant for the subscribers. Subscribers should therefore not contact this site directly unless they feel it absolutely necessary and only for major technical reasons.
The moderation of the ISAP diffusion list will be provisonnaly made by Paul M. Tulkens (ISAP President-elect; <tulkens@facm.ucl.ac.be>) in close conjunction with the Secretary/Treasurer (Prof. G.G. Zhanel <ggzhanel@pcs.mb.ca> and the Associate Secretary (Dr J. Mouton <mouton@bacl.azr.nl>)
Your request will be transmitted to ISAP officers who will notify you of its acceptance.
Sending contributions to ISAP moderated diffusion list (<isap_list>)
To send a contribution, E-mail it to <owner-isap@md.ucl.ac.be> with appropriate enclosures. We will make the necessary format conversions but try to resrict your-self to widely-used word-processing or presentation softwares; in case of doubt, send the enclosures as ASCII files).
Make sure that you have read and uderstood or know the principles of our moderated diffusion list.
